New Big Y distribution center in Springfield — the size of 10 football fields — adding 32 workers when it opens in 2020
Big Y’s massive addition, now under construction at its Roosevelt Avenue headquarters, isn’t a warehouse, according to president and CEO Charles D’Amour: It’s a distribution center with an emphasis on freshness. “We don’t warehouse product here,” D’Amour said Wednesday at a ceremonial groundbreaking for the $46-million expansion project. “We bring it in, and we move it out. It’s like an accordion, filling up throughout the week and emptying for the weekend.”
