$4 million in federal funding awarded to beautify outside Springfield Union Station
Springfield Union Station could soon be getting a new look as more than $4 million in funding has been set aside to improve the outside of the property.
Congressman Richard Neal announced $4.1 million of funding that will go towards improving the area around the station, such as sidewalks, street lights, and benches. This funding was included in the Fiscal Year 2024 spending bill that was signed into law by President Biden on March 9.
Among the intersections and walkways to be improved are Chestnut Street between Lyman and Liberty, the crosswalk at Lyman, Lyman Street from Chestnut to Dwight, and Main Street where it meets Frank B Murray Street. Bio-retention basins, rebuild curbs, tree planters, and a host of improved lighting will make the area more inviting, safe, and climate-resilient.
