Instead of ‘closing doors’ in city, YMCA of Greater Springfield has plans for Tower Square, considers renovation, new building

To keep its doors open in the city, the YMCA of Greater Springfield must attract more dues-paying members, Dexter Johnson, president and CEO, said Monday. To get those members, the Y will need either a wall-to-wall renovation or reconstruction of its building at 275 Chestnut St., built in 1965, or it’ll need a new building either at that site or someplace else, possibly working with local hospitals, Johnson said. The Y is on the verge of announcing the move of its child care and health and wellness exercise facilities to Tower Square, where children would use a rooftop patio for outdoor recreation, he said.
