Housing development could be headed for Springfield Plaza as owner looks to move on from ailing retail economy

The owners of Springfield Plaza think housing might be a viable redevelopment option for at least parts of the sprawling 72-acre complex in the city’s Liberty Heights neighborhood. “That property needs to transition into uses that are more in demand,” said Charles Irving, president of Boston-based Davenport Companies, one of the owners of the plaza and the company that takes the lead in managing the property. “Retail is suffering.”
