In May 2017 there was a bomb scare at the Jewish Community Center in Springfield highlighting the vulnerability of nonprofit organizations to attacks. Although the threat proved to be spurred community members to act.  Coming under the umbrella of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Nonprofit Security Grant Program was set up to help vulnerable nonprofit organizations like the JCC invest in security to protect themselves against attack.
