Executive Editor Wayne Phaneuf to retire; Cynthia Simison named The Republican’s first woman news leader in 195 years

Wayne E. Phaneuf, whose career at The Republican stretches back more than 50 years, will retire as its executive editor on Jan. 1. He will be succeeded by Cynthia G. Simison, the first woman executive editor in the newspaper’s 195-year history. George Arwady, publisher and CEO of The Republican, announced the change in leadership on Thursday.
