CVS breaks ground near MGM Springfield; looks to close its Tower Square pharmacy

City officials gathered Thursday for a ceremonial groundbreaking at Davenport Square and its $2 million CVS drugstore, which is set to open in November on Main Street in the city’s South End. The event came nearly eight years after a devastating June 1, 2011 tornado ripped through the neighborhood and just nine months after the opening of MGM Springfield across the street. “It’s MGM that gave CVS the confidence to look at this neighborhood,” said Charles Irving of Boston-based Davenport Companies, developer of Davenport Square.
