Colony Club, Springfield institution that has hosted 6 presidents, closes after 103 years
The Colony Club in Springfield’s Tower Square, a downtown staple since 1915 that has hosted six presidents, shut down Monday. “We wanted to cease operations with our heads held high,” said Mark Teed, president of the Board of Governors.”We made the toughest decision of all.” The Club made a major push for members three years ago on its 100th birthday. But that recruiting effort was unsuccessful. It was down to 215 members from more than 300 in 2015. “I think it was just a model that wasn’t meeting the needs of young executives,” Teed said. “There was a time when this was a fashionable place to be a member.”
