Western Mass Economic Development Council leader Rick Sullivan retiring
The Western Mass Economic Development Council (EDC) has announced that President and CEO Rick Sullivan will be retiring at the end of this year. Sullivan has helmed the organization since 2015. Before his position at the EDC, he had a lengthy career in public service as Westfield’s mayor for 14 years, as Chief of Staff for former Governor Deval Patrick in 2014 and 2015, as well as directing the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs and the Department of Conservation and Recreation.
Under his direction, the EDC has brought in millions of dollars in economic development investment throughout western Massachusetts, including food science, quantum computing, and clean tech. He was also active in supporting regional initiatives and legislation, expanding and strengthening businesses, enhancing workforce and economic development, and prioritizing equity in the initiatives of the EDC.
“I’m proud of the work that we’ve done,” Sullivan said. “I’m always very mindful of the fact that we’re a team. I’ve been fortunate to have supportive staff here and a board that is really committed to growing the economy of the region. The strength of the EDC is about the people who sit around the table.”
Governor Maura Healey said Sullivan has dedicated his career to advancing economic growth in cities and towns across Massachusetts, especially in Western Mass. “He has been a great partner in our work to support local businesses, create jobs and grow Massachusetts’ leadership in cutting-edge industries,” Healey said. “We wish him the absolute best in his well-deserved retirement, and we look forward to working with the next leader of the EDC to continue to build on his legacy.”
Sullivan will be stepping down on December 31, 2025. The EDC Executive Committee has hired Lindauer, an executive search firm with experience in western Massachusetts, to lead a nationwide search for the next CEO.
