Building Connections Between Education and Industry: WMEDC Meets with Westfield State University

Last week, our CEO, Aaron Vega,  met with President Dr. Linda Thompson and the leadership team at Westfield State University (WSU) for a productive conversation about workforce development, higher education, and expanding opportunities across Western Massachusetts. The discussion highlighted a shared commitment to preparing students for successful careers while strengthening the region’s workforce.

From internships and co-ops to apprenticeship opportunities, WMEDC and WSU are exploring new ways to help students gain valuable experience while supporting local businesses with the talent they need.

As a vital higher education institution serving more than 4,600 students, WSU offers strong academic programs in fields including public safety, healthcare, social work, and business. In addition, the university is making significant investments in workforce development through initiatives such as new makerspaces, the Finn Tech Lab, and expanded career readiness programming designed to equip students with the skills employers need.

A key focus of the meeting was expanding connections between students and the region’s employers through internships, co-ops, and apprenticeship opportunities. As WSU continues to strengthen these experiential learning programs, WMEDC looks forward to helping connect students with local businesses, creating stronger talent pipelines while supporting employers in meeting their workforce needs.

While workforce development was a major focus, it was just one part of a broader conversation. The meeting also explored additional opportunities for collaboration, laying the groundwork for a partnership that we believe will create lasting benefits for students, businesses, and communities across Western Massachusetts.

WMEDC and WSU are already planning a follow-up visit in September to keep these conversations going and dig into new ways to collaborate.
