The Green Region

Western Massachusetts has always been recognized for a blend of urban and suburban areas amidst vast natural resources.

Conservation and preservation is a way of life here, and has become a region-wide mindset and initiative, fueling the area's reputation as fertile ground for green industry clusters, government incentives, academic programs and community-based environmental organizations.

Renewable Energy, Biofuels and similar industries are looking toward Western Massachusetts as an area with the right support structure and mind-set to support the growth of business based in green technology.

Country Home Magazine ranked Springfield as the fourth greenest city in a 2007 nation-wide survey of 379 major metropolitan areas.
The city of Springfield spent about $1 million in 2006 on plantings throughout the city and plans to spend the same amount in the current fiscal year.
In August 2007, Jiminy Peak Ski Resort became the first mountain resort in North America to make its own power by erecting a wind turbine (named "Zephyr") to provide one third of their power needs.
Also in August 2007, Springfield unveiled the first of its "clean" school buses, retrofitted with diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs) to reduce diesel emissions.
A University of Massachusetts professor is working with SunEthanol Inc. to develop her 2007 Biofuel breakthrough, the Q Microbe, a local discovery and the current forefront of cellulosic ethanol technology.
Massachusetts government recently approved a mandate requiring all home heating oil and diesel fuel to contain biofuel by the year 2010.
