The Town of Amherst economy is built upon 663 businesses with 18,433 employees, while Northampton contains 1,141 businesses and 17,934 employees.

Although local industries are largely based in service and retail, this city and town also posses the bulk of the region's more than 800 small, mainly home-based, technology-driven businesses known as the Hidden Tech Industry Cluster.

  • Amherst College- Consistently ranked one of the nation's top liberal-arts colleges
  • Hampshire College- A private liberal arts college
  • University of Massachusetts-Amherst- The flagship campus of the commonwealth's university system 
  • Smith College- A prestigious, private woman's liberal arts college
  • Cooley Dickinson Hospital-  A locally governed, not-for-profit community hospital
  • ServiceNet- The largest human service and mental health agency in Western Massachusetts
  • Clark School for the Deaf- School for the Deaf/Center for Oral Education has been developing the listening and speaking skills of children with hearing loss
  • National Evaluation Systems-  An educational testing company that develops and administers customized teacher certification testing programs and other assessment programs in higher education
