In 2000, a National Science Foundation grant was awarded to the University of Massachusetts for studies to define and discover the region's primary industries as well as to found the Regional Technology Corporation (RTC) to manage and develop technology clusters. The Regional Technology Corporation (RTC) became an Affiliate Partner of the Economic Development Council of Western Massachusetts in 2000.

Today, the RTC is a thriving international non-profit organization, partnering with global corporations, organizations and academia to bring new business and technologies to its more than 130 member companies and the region.
