Former MSPCA building to reopen as animal shelterBy Rich Tettemer04/30/2009- News 22 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Good news for animal lovers in western Massachusetts. Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society has announced the purchase of the building at 171 Union Street in Springfield from the MSPCA for $1.2 million. The move will enable Dakin to expand its successful animal adoption and outreach programs from Hampshire and Franklin counties to Hampden County in the upcoming months. They hope to open the new center August 1. The MSPCA was forced to shut down its adoption center at the end of March due to the loss of nearly $11.5 million from its endowment.
